Branch Organiser

The Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) is the nation’s oldest and largest blue-collar trade union.

The AWU Tasmanian Branch is currently seeking to employ a permanent full time Organiser based in North-West Tasmania to assist members in gaining and exercising power in their workplaces, industry and communities.

The role is responsible for working in a team environment to:

  • Identify strategic growth targets within allocated workplaces and industry sectors.
  • Develop and implement workplace plans to grow union membership, strength, and activism.
  • Coordinate the negotiation of enterprise agreements to ensure improved wages and conditions for members.
  • Working with delegates, activists, and other AWU officials & organisers to implement industry and union-wide campaigns.
  • Work with OHS delegates to ensure all workplaces are safe.
  • Assist members with grievances and enquires.
  • Representing the AWU and members at the Fair Work Commission.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

To be considered for this role you must have the following:

  • A strong relevant employment history with experience in the Industrial Relations field or union movement, including previous experience as a delegate or workplace activist.
  • Commitment to Union values and principles.
  • Good knowledge of Union operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in campaigning and collective bargaining.
  • Good knowledge of the Australian Industrial Relations system.
  • Excellent time management and organisation skills.
  • Demonstrated dispute resolution and grievance handling skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiating skills.
  • Current driver’s licence.
  • Computer literate and ability to utilise relevant technology tools.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification or demonstrated relevant Industrial Relations, Human Resource Management, or Union experience is desirable.
