AWU WA Branch Delegate Appreciation Night

February 9, 2021

Our first annual AWU WA Branch Delegate Appreciation Night took place on 30 January 2021 at the INGOT Hotel.

The evening was inaugurated to celebrate the hard work of our delegates and HSRs do day in and day out. They work tirelessly to ensure that you are kept safe and get a better deal at work.

Delegates are the beating heart of our union helping us attain more bargaining power and negotiate your EBAs.

We recognised those delegates who have gone above and beyond representing members in their workplaces we officially launched our Delegate of the Year, the Hartlebury Honour, the Health and Safety Award, the Stronger Together Award and the Enduring Service Award to recognise 5 particularly hard working delegates.

Delegate of the Year: Ryan Foxon

Ryan worked tirelessly with Organiser Dan McCaig to ensure that his fellow AWU members at Cleanaway were all paid their Team Leader allowance after Cleanaway wrongly thought that a “team of 2 or more” meant 3. Ryan’s dedication and extra hours outside of work all while employed as a casual led to him and Dan recouping $112,000 in unpaid allowances for his workmates. This is why Ryan is our Delegate of the Year. Congratulations Ryan!

Hartlebury Honour: Grace Luu

Grace formerly of Steggles has always gone above and beyond for her union. There are many people of differing cultural backgrounds working at Steggles and Grace supports Organisers Suliman Ali by translating Mandarin to English for those who struggle with communication in English. This means that all her workmates are able to get the proper representation they need at work regardless of language barriers. It’s this kind of above and beyond attitude that has earned her the Hartlebury Honour, named after the late Paul Hartlebury, who always went above and beyond for his members. Well done Grace!

Health and Safety: Chris Starre

Safety is our #1 priority and Chris embodies this value day in day out. Chris is our delegate and HSR at DM Roads. He always works tirelessly to ensure that both our roads and his colleagues are safe. We thought it was fitting that this award was presented by the Minister for Industrial Relations and friend of the AWU, Hon. Bill Johnston MLA. Congratulations Chris!

Stronger Together: Cylynn Criddle

We’re stronger when we work together and Cylynn ensures that Union Chicken remains good chicken, in both her role as Quality Controller but also as one of our delegates ensuring strong union membership at Steggles allowing for fair wages and conditions to be negotiated each EBA. These outcomes are only possible thanks to the tough conversations had by delegates like Cylynn recruiting and retaining countless members each year. Thank you Cylynn.

Enduring Service: Troy Stewart

Troy is one of our dedicated delegates out at BP Kwinana. He’s had a tough year looking out for his colleagues, himself and ensuring that not a single AWU member is left behind. BP Kwinana made a heartless decision to inform its members of their closure by SMS. A move that was simply not good enough, but lucky for his workmates, they had Troy and his delegate team who have been nothing short of amazing, enduring this callous treatment all while ensuring his workmates are not forgotten. Thank you Troy.

Thank you to every single AWU delegate and HSR in Western Australia, without you our union could not function nor would it be as successful as it is today. If you are an AWU delegate or HSR would like to attend next year’s Delegate Appreciation Night, please email [email protected] and we’ll put you on the list!
