Local Steel for Local Projects

June 6, 2019 12:00 am

In the lead up to the 2018 Victorian Election, Premier Daniel Andrews guaranteed that 92% of the steel used on local projects would be local steel. Local steel means local manufacturing jobs. Andrews has gone back on that local content pledge on the West Gate Tunnel project, with the announcement that the tunnel builder will import 33,000 tonnes of Chinese steel for the project.

The Government needs to immediately review all infrastructure contracts to ensure that local steel is maximised. They need to fix this and make sure it never happens again.

This week I went with AWU delegates from Liberty Steel Mill to Parliament House to meet our state treasurer Tim Palas. We went to voice our concerns over the fact that John Holland is importing 33000 tonnes of Chinese steel. John Holland signed a contract to deliver 92% local steel on the Metro and Westgate tunnel projects and it is not credible for them to say that this could not have been done locally when Australia has the capacity to mill the steel and fabricate the sections.

Sign the petition and tell Andrews to ditch the Chinese steel
