AWU Statement on BCC Wage Freeze

AWU Media Statement:
Brisbane City Council Wage Freeze Announcement

1st April 2020

In a press conference today, Brisbane Mayor Adrian Schrinner unilaterally announced a two-year freeze on all Brisbane City Council employees’ wages with zero discussion or consultation, AWU Queensland Branch Secretary Steve Baker said.

“To make this announcement with no consultation just days after an election is nothing short of disgraceful,” Steve said.

“We know these are tough times – but simply declaring a pay freeze straight out of the blue without discussing it with the affected workers defies belief.

“Our members perform a tough, hard job serving the community, and for them to be treated like this is just not on.

“Brisbane City Council workers deserve better than to find out about their wages being frozen by reading it in the news.

“We’ll be doing everything we can to put a stop to this unfair, unnecessary decision.”
