Union Win – Christmas Eve Public Holiday Becomes Official!

November 28, 2019

In a huge win for AWU members, the State Government officially passed legislation on 27th November 2019 to make Christmas Eve night a public holiday.

The Holidays and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2019 was passed by the Queensland Parliament, making amendments to legislation for a part-day public holiday for six hours from 6pm on Christmas Eve.

This is a huge win for the thousands of AWU members who have to sacrifice time with family and friends to work over Christmas, making sure they receive the compensation they deserve for this sacrifice.

AWU members from right across Queensland work tirelessly to keep our state running – being properly recognised for spending time away from home on one of the most important nights of the year is a no-brainer.

We’ve been fighting for this change for a long time, with the AWU making a formal submission in support of these laws after almost a hundred per cent of members said they supported the change.

Well done to everyone who helped make this possible.

If you have any questions, please contact your AWU Organiser on 1800 298 753.
