Concerns for seriously injured Cooktown Quarry Worker

July 19, 2019

The Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) Queensland Branch Secretary Steve Baker said the union’s primary concerns are for the worker injured in yesterday’s quarry incident in Cooktown.

“Our number one concern is for the welfare of the young man injured working at a Cooktown quarry yesterday – and the welfare of his family and friends,” Steve said.

“The AWU wants to see yesterday’s incident thoroughly investigated by the mining regulator to get to the bottom of what has occurred.

“The AWU is committed to making sure that any safety problems are identified, and for those safety problems to be addressed.

Steve said the AWU has also been actively pushing to change the health & safety culture within the industry.

The AWU has said this incident has highlighted the need for all parties to work together to make workplaces safer.

Every worker should be able to go to work knowing they’ll be able to head home safe to their family at the end of every shift.
