AWU QLD Member Updates – COVID-19

A Message from Steve Baker
AWU Queensland Branch Secretary

With cases of COVID-19 continuing to develop right across Queensland, the AWU has been hard at work making sure you’re kept safe and treated fairly at work.

We’re extremely proud of the work being done by AWU members in the face of this unprecedented challenge.

Our members in hospitals and aged and disability care have been at the frontline of caring for the community during this health emergency, while AWU members in retail, resources and energy, logistics, manufacturing, construction, local government and all other industries have literally kept Queensland running during this time.

AWU officials are working around the clock to make sure that members are kept safe and treated fairly.

With workers facing this challenge, AWU Organisers will be making your health and safety their absolute priority.

If you have a safety issue at your site, or don’t think your employer is doing the right thing, you should speak to your AWU Delegate or Organiser immediately.

In addition to representing members in the workplace, we’ve also been making it clear that the Federal Government must do more to support workers affected by this crisis.

While we’ve managed to secure special pandemic leave and other special arrangements for many members, including casuals so that they’re not financially disadvantaged, it’s clear the Government needs to step up to the plate and do more.

Additionally, in the interests of keeping our members safe and in line with official public health advice, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all Labour Day events this year.

Labour Day is always a great opportunity to join together and celebrate our wins, but with health and safety paramount, unfortunately, we have no choice but to cancel this year’s event and come back bigger and stronger in 2021.

We’ve been keeping AWU members updated every step of the way, so make sure you’re checking your emails for regular updates and advice.

Remember – there has never been a more important time to be a member of the AWU.

We are ready and willing to help all members in need during this time – make sure you reach out if you need help.
