The Australian Workers' Union has warmly welcomed the announcement of GFG Alliance as the new owner of Arrium Australia.

AWU National Secretary Daniel Walton said the confirmation of GFG represented a great day for Arrium workers and the town of Whyalla.

"This is the outcome we have been working so hard toward for well over a year. This is the certainty we wanted to deliver for workers and their families," Mr Walton said.

"Throughout this entire difficult 15 months Arrium workers – our members – have shown tremendous courage and discipline in keeping this operation humming along and producing the highest quality Australian steel.

"As the representative of over 2000 Arrium workers the Australian Workers' Union has engaged constructively with other key stakeholders and the administrator through what has been the most complex administration process in Australian history.

Today's result is what we have been seeking.

"GFG Alliance enjoys an outstanding international reputation as a good corporate citizen with a responsible, long-term vision of success.

"They have invested strongly in heavy industry in Europe and the  UK and it is this mindset they will bring to Australia. The Australian steel industry has a bright future, and the GFG Alliance has the track record to realise it.

"Importantly all stakeholders are entering into this new arrangement with a clear and commonly understood vision of how Arrium, and Whyalla, can thrive into the future.

"This is an excellent day for the Australian steel industry, for the national economy, and for the collective power of workers' voices.

"The power and organisation of our collective voice meant that our members — along with their families and communities — were front and centre in discussions about the future of Arrium operations.

"Today's result is vindication for them."
