Australian Workers’ Union National Secretary Scott McDine has been elected to represent the union on the Committee of Creditors at the meeting of Arrium creditors held in Sydney today.

The meeting also formally approved KordaMentha as administrator.

Mr McDine characterised the inaugural meeting as positive.

“It is encouraging to see everyone involved pulling in the same direction,” Mr McDine said.

“It really is in everyone’s interest for Arrium to not only survive, but to thrive. With the continued cooperation of union employees, Arrium’s creditors, and the administrator, such an outcome is eminently achievable.

“It is now important that all stakeholders — union employees/non-union employees, representatives, suppliers, contractors, note holders, financiers, customers, and government — work cohesively during this testing period.

“The responsibility that has been entrusted to me as the legal representative of 2000 Arrium workers is one that I, and the AWU as whole, takes extremely seriously.

“Our union will be looking to provide as much assistance as we possibly can to the administrator to get Arrium back on its feet and thriving as a major steel player.”
