It’s time for Industrial Manslaughter Laws to Protect Resources Workers

February 27, 2020

There is no larger priority for the AWU than making sure our members have safe workplaces.

This is especially important for workers in mines and quarries who operate in high-risk, demanding environments.

It’s only by taking real action to hold big mining and quarry companies to account that we can achieve proper, meaningful change.

Tragically, over the past twenty months alone, eight mine and quarry workers in Queensland have lost their lives at work.

It’s because of tragedies like this that we’ve been fighting for years for industrial manslaughter laws so that employers and executives are held to the highest possible standards to keep workers safe.

Industrial Manslaughter laws are crucial to making mine and quarry employers accountable to deliver safer workplaces free from risk or incident, and we’ve been fighting for years to make them law in Queensland.

That’s why we’ve made a submission to the Queensland Government to make sure these laws get through Parliament and can start protecting Queensland workers.

We’ve also called on the Government to go further still and introduce laws to protect workers who speak up about safety issues.

It’s only by taking real action to hold big mining and quarry companies to account that we can achieve proper, meaningful change.
