Smoke Haze – Stay Safe this Summer

January 13, 2020

AWU Workplace Health & Safety Alert

January 2020

Smoke Haze

Bushfire smoke contains a mixture of gases and very fine particles that can be hazardous to health.

Those most at risk are outdoor workers.

A combination of soaring temperatures and bushfire smoke could lead to severe illnesses, especially in people with heart and lung conditions.

The steps needed to minimise exposure include:

‚ÄĘ locating work inside, in enclosed structures or vehicles

‚ÄĘ changing the place of work to where smoke levels are lower

‚ÄĘ increasing frequency and length of rest times and

‚ÄĘ reducing the physical intensity of work to help lower breathing and heart rates.

Contact your AWU Organiser immediately if you have any questions or require assistance.
