Message to AWU Members at Tully Mill

September 27, 2019

Message from Steve Baker

Dear AWU Member,

On behalf of the entire AWU, our hearts go out to the family, friends, and workmates of the AWU member tragically killed in Tully over the weekend.

Our thoughts are also with the two cane train drivers who are also AWU members and have also been directly affected by this terrible tragedy.

We want AWU members like you to know you have the Union’s full support at this time – this incident affects all at Tully Mill and the broader community.

Everybody should go to work with the knowledge that they’ll be able to go home at the end of each day without any injuries.

AWU officials have been on the ground to try to determine exactly what has happened, and how we can prevent it from ever happening again.

I have also written to the CEO of Tully Sugar seeking support for workers at Tully Mill, support for the family of the member who died, and seeking the Union’s participation in any investigation conducted by Tully Sugar. Click here to read the letter to this email for you to read.

It’s critical you have representation and a witness with you before talking to anyone – it’s important that members not go into interviews without their union organiser.

Make sure you take advantage of your right as an AWU member to be represented.

So if you’re approached by Management or the Police for an interview, or asked to attend a meeting or any type of debriefing, please contact your AWU Organiser Terry Osmond before making any statements or comments.

If you have any questions, concerns or need to speak to someone please contact your AWU Organiser Terry Osmond calling 1800 298 753.

In Unity,

Steve Baker
The Australian Workers’ Union
Queensland Branch Secretary

Every worker should be able to go to work knowing they’ll be able to head home safe to their family at the end of every shift.
