What has the AWU done for me?

Many of the wages and conditions listed below that we now take for granted have been gained through the efforts of union members acting collectively.

  • The 38 Hour Week
  • Annual Leave
  • Paid Sick Leave
  • Maternity and Parental Leave
  • Minimum Wages
  • Occupational Health Legislation
  • Superannuation
  • Overtime Payments
  • Shift Penalties
  • Tea, Meal and Rest Breaks
  • Location Allowances
  • Site and Disability Allowances
  • Travelling Money
  • Meal Allowances
  • Long Service Leave

Many employers would like to remove or reduce these benefits.
Part of the Union's job is to maintain and improve your conditions.

Insurances

Union membership is a form of insurance.
We insure our house - We insure our contents - We insure our car - We insure our health We should insure our jobs, our wages and our conditions.

Representation

The Union represents its members before various tribunals:

  • The Industrial Relations Commission
  • The Industrial Magistrates Court
  • WorkCover

REMEMBER YOUR UNION FEES ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE

"For a worker to refuse to belong to a union is not to exercise a democratic freedom. It is to accept benefits that others have worked for without contributing to the costs. Democracy flourishes only when freedom is accompanied by responsibility."
