The TAPS branch of The Australian Workers. Union has played a central role in improving the lives of working Australians and their families.

The AWU's national secretary, Paul Howes, has recently written to all AWU members in this branch to thank them for their consistent commitment to the values of unionism.

In the new era we face with the election of a Federal Government prepared to listen to the voices of a broader cross-section of Australian society we believe the AWU has new opportunities to grow and to protect your interests, Paul Howes told members.

To ensure better working conditions for our members the leadership of the AWU has adopted a growth plan for each state . a plan which integrates all sections of our great organisation, the oldest union in Australia.

While the AWU is proud of being the oldest union we know that we have only survived because we have always been prepared to renew ourselves by creating union structures which are appropriate for the day.

Branch secretaries from across Australia met at the end of 2007 to debate the best possible structures for our union which can match the demands put on us by our growing industries.

As part of that debate we agreed that at this moment the best way to go forward is to create strong geographical branches, thus it was agreed by all that the TAPS Branch members should become part of the wider, stronger state structure.

From January 2008 if you are a TAPS branch member you will be part of your local state branch which we believe will be able to provide you with more support, services and protection as we grow our membership.
