AWU to lobby Tasmanian and Federal Govt to defend Rosebery Hospital29 February 2008The AWU has stepped up a campaign in support of the Rosebery Hospital after the Tasmanian branch won the backing of the 130,000 member union’s National Executive at their two-day meeting in Hobart.
" After a report to the delegates from across the country the AWU National Executive has resolved to write to the Tasmanian Government to say the union backed the people of the West Coast on this issue," Ian Wakefield, AWU Tasmania Branch Secretary, said. " The AWU is calling on the Tasmanian Government to immediately implement plans which will allow for the re-instatement of the Rosebery Hospital. " We want to work with the Tasmanian Government to get the Federal Labor Government to ensure the Australian Health Care Plan provides support to remote communities who need primary health care facilities. "Our national union leadership are prepared to lobby hard the Canberra bureaucrats and politicians who will make these decisions to see if we can get Rosebery Hospital operating again." The AWU has held meetings of West Coast mine workers and their families who want to see the retention of basic health services on the West Coast. " We work in a dangerous industry. Our people and their families want the Rosebery Hospital maintained as a key prop to the OHS needs of the mine industry in this part of Tasmania."
