130 workers facing the loss of their jobs and up to $3 million in redundancy entitlements will hold a protest meeting against the Federal Government’s redundancy and insolvency laws in Melbourne tomorrow (Thursday July 15).
Forgecast workers vote for 87 jobs, extra $1.6 million
More than 100 Forgecast workers voted to keep the company trading today in a deal which saves 87 jobs and provides for an extra $1.6 million in redundancy payments. However, 47 positions will be made redundant at the Melbourne die-casting factory.

AWU Welcomes Maxwell Report
Australian Workers’ Union National Secretary Bill Shorten has welcomed the release of the report by Chris Maxwell QC into reforming Victoria’s Occupational Health and Safety legislation and congratulated Industrial Relations Minister Rob Hulls for ensuring the review took place. Mr. Shorten said that the Maxwell report is the first review of any substance of Victoria’s occupational health and safety laws and practices since 1985.

Esso Threatens Victoria's Gas Supplies
Over 300 Bass Strait oilrig workers, who perform critical construction work to guarantee Victoria’s gas supplies, will be locked-out from Tuesday by Esso sub-contractors. The lock-out is being used by companies to force the workers to double to amount of time that they are on the oilrigs for. The lock-out will be in place through-out Easter and is not due to be fully lifted until 6th May 2004.
