Our jobs, our economy, in good hands for working Australians under Labor

19 August 2010

Only one party understands why working families are concerned about job security, decent treatment in the workplace and the protection of workplace entitlements.

Paul Howes campaigning [paul howes campaigning 1.jpg]“ Federal Labor, in government,  has ensured that the economic interests of working people are well protected, “ Paul Howes, AWU National Secretary, said.

“ Julia Gillard understands that backing jobs, keeping people in work, should be our first priority in hard economic times.

" Labor can handle these tough economic times in a way that protects the interests of Australian working people."

Across Australia everyone asks what will happen to my rights at work after Saturday

Meeting union members in workplaces, to discuss which party best understands the economic needs of working families, the AWU leader has explained why we need the re-election of the Gillard Government on Saturday.

“ Whether I am in a workplace in regional Australia, or in a capital city manufacturing site, everyone asks me what will happen to my right to be have a voice in my future at work after Saturday.

“ The answer is the same whether I am talking to members in Rockhampton or Brisbane;  in the industrial city of  Newcastle or  the outer suburbs of Melbourne or  the working suburbs of Perth.

Tony Abbott represents real risk to jobs, real risk to our rights at work

“ Tony Abbott represents a real risk to jobs, a real risk to our rights at work,” Paul Howes warned.

“ That’s why the re-election on Saturday of the Gillard Government is important to working Australians.”

Our jobs protected during a global financial storm which wreaked havoc in other countries

“ Across the globe Australia is credited for having almost the only successful government keeping people in jobs during the global financial crisis.

“ Jobs by the tens of thousands disappeared in the UK, Europe, Canada, USA and Japan during the global financial crisis, leaving working families struggling.

" The Australian Labor Party not only handled the global crisis better than all other advanced industrial countries but we did it without doing over working people - which is what happened elsewhere!

“ Here in Australia because of a smart economic stimulus package we kept Australians in jobs.

“ Now there is talk that some of our big economic partners could slip back into a double-dip recession.

Economic forecasters predict more financial gales

“We can’t afford to have a government in Canberra who doesn’t care about workers’ jobs  if we are hit with a second wave economic crisis in the coming years,” Paul Howes warned.

“  Forget whatever Tony Abbott says to get himself elected. The Opposition Leader has a long track record of opposition to basic workplace protections .

“ He and his close friend Senator Abetz are committed ideologues who want to bring back WorkChoices again – even if they change the name.

Libs should return to Aussie fair-go at work values

“ I hope that a second defeat for this small group of ideologues, who now have a stranglehold on the Liberal-National Party, will force them to retire from the political stage.

“ The Opposition will then have a chance to re-build, adopt a more moderate stance,  and  return to backing traditional Australian values of a fair-go in our workplaces.

“ Meanwhile only one party is ready to put working families as their number one priority in hard economic times.

“ We need a Labor Government in Canberra to see us through this global uncertainty, to ensure we deliver a fair-go to all Australians,” Paul Howes said.
