Federal and State politicians are being asked to closely study the AWU's 30-page New Steel Plan document which was launched at Parliament House in Canberra.
The Plan aims at staving off the complete collapse of our iron and steel industry - at a time when global pressures are seeing mass-sackings, and steel plant shutdowns in Europe, North America and Asia.
New Steel Plan launched with Port Kembla workers
AWU National Secretary, Paul Howes, launched the New Steel Plan together with Port Kembla steelworkers in Canberra.
He told national media that, to date, Australia has been able to avoid the massive jobs crisis which the steel industry in other parts of the globe has already suffered.
The AWU New Steel Plan wants government infrastructure spending to include procurement policies which support the local steel industry; the plan also calls on our steel industry to use our high-grade Australian iron ore, to uphold best-practice steelmaking methods and use the local labour force.
