Growing the union to deliver social justice in the workplace

07 February 2009

On the first day of the AWU 2009 National Conference delegates first turned to the issue of how we best adopt a strategic approach to growing our union.

Delegates from across the country voted for a plan to dedicate extra resources to the union growth strategy,  and commit the union to the continued application of new resources to further the industrial interests of AWU members in every State and Territory.

National Conference directed the union leadership to identify significant projects and industry-wide growth campaigns based on detailed research and planning to ensure the good work of the union and its members continues into the decades ahead.

The AWU national growth plan is squarely focused on securing the future of our current members and potential members and the industries they work in.

As Australia’s oldest and largest continuously operating blue collar union, we understand that unity is strength , and that we are stronger together.

Over the last two years the AWU leadership team has made a concerted effort to address the issue of renewal and growth within our union. What started as a tremendously successful campaign  by the Queensland Branch in the health industry has now been developed into a national growth campaign initiative.

A national charter for growth  will include  building our density in workplaces where our union already has an established presence, with a coordinated approach to industry campaigning throughout the country and between branches.
