The AWU calls on the government to:
- Establish a National Asbestos Register for all Australians ill from, or exposed to asbestos. Click Here to Register on The AWU National Asbestos Register
- Create a National Asbestos Taskforce to manage the prioritised recall of all asbestos containing materials in all its forms.
- Establish a Naitonal Register or all buildings and structures containing asbestos.
- Establish a national body with a regulatory mandate to map priority areas for asbestos product removal.
National Asbestos Register
Anyone who has been exposed to asbestos at any time is at risk of developing respiratory disease or cancer. Even if the person is currently healthy, the risk of developing a life-threatening asbestos related illness remains. We hope it never happens to you, but if you receive an asbestos related illness, you may be entitled to compensation. Listing the details of your asbestos exposure on The AWU National Asbestos Register, even if you are currently healthy, may assist possible future claims for compensation.
The AWU is calling for the establishment of a Government National Asbestos Register for all Australians ill from, or exposed to asbestos. It would streamline compensation payments for asbestos victims and in time help to establish a uniform national level of both compensation and medical care.

What is The AWU National Asbestos Register?
The AWU National Asbestos Register is a database established and maintained by The Australian Workers' Union and Maurice Blackburn Lawyers. It is a free service that enables people to make a formal record of their asbestos exposure should the information be required in the future. There are currently more than 6,000 registrants, and as the database becomes bigger it also becomes more useful - for you as well as for other victims of asbestos related diseases.
-
Why Register
Asbestos related diseases can take many decades to develop - often long after the actual exposure. After diagnosis with an asbestos related disease it can sometimes be difficult to remember when and how the asbestos exposure occurred. Information stored on The AWU National Asbestos Register can assist you to recall relevant information and provides a starting point for a claim if it's needed. Of course, some people never need to recall the information - because not everyone develops an asbestos related disease after exposure. There is the added benefit of the large numbers of people registering because the information can help others by identifying locations or ways people have been exposed, and dates of the existence of businesses, plants or mines. It may help identify a source of exposure that is missing from someone's history - and that might help them make a claim.
National Asbestos Taskforce
A Naitonal Asbestos Taskforce would facilitate and resource an Asbestos Summit, to bring together industry leaders, regulatory bodies and the nation's top medical asbestos disease experts. Together with Governments, state, federal and local, such a summit could identify urgent priority areas for asbestos removal.
Regulatory National Body
The Federal Government must establish a national body with a regulatory mandate to map priority areas for asbestos product removal, such as schools and public places, and oversee its careful and total removal.
The removal of all asbestos products from Australia by 2030 is achievable, if the Federal Government shows leadership and makes it a priority.
