Legal Officer - Port Kembla Branch of The Australian Workers' Union
An excellent opportunity exists for a full-time Legal Officer to join the Port Kembla Branch of The Australian Workers’ Union (AWU).
The successful candidate must have excellent research skills, attention to detail and possess the ability to liaise and negotiate effectively with relevant internal and external stakeholders.
The Legal Office is responsible for overseeing and providing advice related to Employment and Industrial Relations matters. The responsibilities of the position include advice, representation and advocacy for our members on a wide range of industrial and employment law matters. Applications from Legal Officers with varying experience are welcome. Legal qualifications are essential. Experience in industrial relations will be regarded favorably.
Position expectations:
- Preparation and representation of members before Fair Work Australia, State Industrial Relations Commission, Magistrates Court
- Negotiating with employers on individual and collective issues.
- Research, monitoring and reporting on industrial law developments
Desirable attributes:
- Experience within a union
- Experience in Industrial Relations

Position Description:
The position will involve the development of a national training syllabus as well as the maintenance of a national training database. The National Trainer will oversee the education and development of organisers and delegates within the AWU and the position will require travel flexibility.
Position expectations:
- To develop or assist in developing a national training syllabus.
- Responsibility for compiling and maintaining training competencies
- Conduct training sessions for both organisers and delegates.
- Frequent travel to AWU branches
- Annually review training curriculum.
- Work with AWU branches in organiser and delegate development.
Desirable attributes:
- Experience within a union preferably as a trainer/ educator.
- Understanding of strategic planning within a team environment.
- Adult education experience.
- Experience in developing and evaluating training curriculum.
Essential criteria:
- Ability to liaise with internal/ external union representatives across a broad range of industries.
- Proven ability to work in a team atmosphere.
- IT skills in MSOffice applications.
- Current drivers licence.
- Excellent organisational skills.
