Australia's oldest union and our biggest blue-collar union held its national conference in the first week of February 2009 in the Surfers' Paradise Room at Conrad Jupiter's Resort in Queensland. More than 300 union members and observers attended the Australian Workers' Union conference. On the first full day of the conference (Monday February 2, 2009) the AWU National Secretary, Paul Howes, made a major speech at the conference about the priorities for the Australian Workers' Union - especially protecting jobs in the face of the global financial crisis.
